He wakes to find Belimai pulling his boots off. He also goes after Captain Brandson, the Inquisitor Greeley put in charge of the case, to get more information. He destroys and mixes signed confessions. Harper learns that Edward and Sariel have been arrested. They go to Harper’s estate where Belimai has drug withdrawal symptoms. Belimai packs up his belongings and flees with Harper. The place is trashed but Belimai is okay.
He realises Belimai might be targetted and rushes to his home. Abbot Greeley wants to get rid of Harper but Harper runs and takes the old woman to Edward’s house for treatment. Worse, Abbot Greeley and a few of the Inquisitors are working to pin the murder on a flying Prodigal rather than Cedric who used to assault the girl. The girl, the daughter of Lord Cedric, is dead. Harper gleans more information from the old woman then races to the location. He sees a woman claiming that a girl is going to be killed. On the way there, he hears cries for help and leaves the carriage. Harper is made to take a “holiday” to his birth father’s estate. After three weeks, Belimai goes to the bar and sees Harper there who had just been released by the Inquisition himself. Belimai is cornered by the two and about to meet the same fate as Roffcale when the female Prodigal and Harper come to the rescue. Harper and Belimai get a new lead with lawyers who support Prodigal causes. He rescues a female Prodigal who burns down Edward’s house. Belimai turns Sariel down because he’s not the person he used to be. It wasn’t until they used drugs on him that Belimai confessed (he became a drug addict). Belimai was taken in by the Inquisitors and tortured even though he refused to say Sariel’s name who had been trespassing. The two used to be lovers since their school years. Sariel later meets Belimai on the rooftop asking to get back together. When Belimai sees him, uncomfortable memories resurface. Sariel is one of the leaders of Good Commons. Hells Below is full of Prodigals, not exactly demons but beings with special abilities.
They visit Hells Below, specifically the Good Commons, a club Joan was a member of. Harper and Belimai get drunk and sleep together. Belimai and Harper visit the prison to see Peter Roffcale who had sent Joan warning letters about her imminent death. Harper is Joan’s step-brother while Edward was her husband.
